Overview

Kedai Makan Soon Lai, nestled at 6C Jalan Fatimah in Kampung Sateh, Batu Pahat, stands as a humble yet noteworthy destination for lovers of authentic Chinese cuisine. This restaurant, situated opposite The Silver Inn and a Chinese temple, offers a nostalgic experience enriched through time, blending tradition with a modernized dining environment.

The main draw here is undoubtedly the Kuay Chap (粿汁), served with a variety of tender braised meats including lean pork, pork belly, intestines, and eggs. The broth impresses with its comforting depth, free of overpowering or unpleasant odors — a sign of meticulous preparation and quality ingredients. This dish speaks to those seeking a hearty, soulful meal that honors the classic flavors of Johor's Chinese culinary heritage.

Alongside the Kuay Chap, patrons can delight in other signature offerings such as Portuguese-style egg tarts (蛋挞), aromatic chili sauces, and a selection of braised delicacies like梅菜 (preserved mustard greens) and卤猪内脏 (braised pork innards). The humble currypuff and local-style rojak add layers of texture and flavor, appealing to the adventurous eater and those seeking familiar Malaysian-Chinese comfort food.

The restaurant space, having undergone considerable renovation, now boasts an air-conditioned, spacious, and clean dining area. This improvement addresses the previous challenges of crowding and heat, making it an inviting spot for families and groups. The atmosphere retains a cozy, homey vibe, enhanced by the lively chatter typical of a beloved neighbourhood eatery. Despite its popularity during peak hours, the staff remain attentive and efficient, maintaining a systematic order process that minimizes wait times.

Kedai Makan Soon Lai caters to a diverse clientele—from longtime locals revisiting a familiar favorite to curious food enthusiasts exploring the rich flavors of Batu Pahat’s Chinese cuisine. The restaurant embraces its roots while accommodating modern expectations, ensuring that each visit delivers authentic taste in a comfortable setting.

For those who appreciate the art of slow-cooked, flavorful dishes paired with a no-frills ambiance, Kedai Makan Soon Lai offers an experience where simplicity meets excellence. Visited this place after 10 years. Lots of renovation. More spacious. Air conditioned dining space. More systematic way of ordering. Food still tastes great. Egg tart was alright. Aiyu jelly was tasty.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon at ard 1.30pm. Seeking for parking took a while and finally got one within walking distance. Lunch hour, and the shop is busy and almost full. Was told by seller waiting time of 20-30mins and most popular parts are sold out. Additional choice of egg tarts, ottak and Ice-cream, but not in my order list Make my order and seated in the air-con dining area while waiting for the food to be served. The dining area are cooling, bright and clean, staff moving around busy cleaning Watching and listening to the chatting voices up and down from the surrounding table, very homey feeling. Some may not like the smell of it, but for some, it is tongue swallowing. To me, it's OK. The bill comes up to RM31.10 for 2 of us. Considering reasonable price

Came on a Saturday 11:15am. No queue. Restaurant is directly opposite The Silver Inn and a Chinese temple. Kway Chap is smooth. Lean pork and chili good.

Not a kueh chap fan but I liked it! The kueh was soft, the braised pork was soft and tender! Importantly no weird smell of the sauce. Liked the fish bean curd, soft and tasty! The cracker outside the shop was not bad too, worth to give it a try!

Stopped by Kedai Makan Soon Lai and was pleasantly surprised by how good the kuay chap was. The broth was comforting, and the braised meats were flavourful and tender, especially the pork belly. Even the braised intestines were well-cleaned and tasty, which is not easy to find everywhere. It’s a simple, no-frills spot that serves a good old-fashioned bowl of kuay chap that feels authentic and value for money. Sometimes the best meals are the straightforward ones like this.

Need to queue. The kuey zhau is not bad but the soup is a bit tasteless. Maybe for my taste, I prefer more heavy taste. Will come again.
